When it comes to guns and the Second Amendment rap artist and TV star Ice-T, who is liberal, does not pull punches and says that the right to bear arms is “the last form of defense against tyranny,” and that the right is not about hunting animals but about protecting oneself from an oppressive government. In an interview on Britain’s Channel 4 News, host Krishnan Guru-Murthy asked Ice-T, in reference to the 2012 mass shooting in Aurora, Colo.,  “why he’s such a defender of the right to bear arms.”

Ice-T said,  “Well, I’ll give up my gun when everybody else does. Doesn’t that make sense? If there were guns here, would you want to be the only person without one?

Guru-Murthy then asked, “So do you carry guns routinely at home?”

Ice-T answered, “Yeah, it’s legal in the United States. It’s part of our Constitution. You know, the right to bear arms is because that’s the last form of defense against tyranny. Not to hunt. It’s to protect yourself from the police.”

Guru-Murthy said,  “And do you see any link between that and these sorts of incidents [in Aurora]?”

“No, not really,” said Ice-T. “You know what I’m saying, if somebody wants to kill people, you know, they don’t need a gun to do it.”

Guru-Murthy, “It makes it easier though, doesn’t it?

“Not really,” said Ice-T. “You can strap explosives on your body, they do that all the time.”

The Channel 4 host then remarked about a “backlash” of the anti-gun lobby and Ice-T said,  “Well, that’s not going to change anything in the United States. The United States is based on guns, you know.”

“Like [the rapper] KRS says, ‘you’ll never have justice on stolen land,’” said Ice-T. “So, it’s not going to change.”

Ice-T, born Tracy Lauren Marrow, started his rap music career in the 1980s and won the “Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group” in 1991. He also has acted in the movies New Jack City, Surviving the Game, The Heist, and The Other Guys, and has played Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit since 2000.
